Soil Intelligence Working Group
Soil Intelligence Working Group
The Soil Intelligence Working Group is a community of researchers, modelers and data scientists who are working to accelerate the adoption of model-based, AI-assisted and data-driven methods in soil science. Focusing on the emerging concept of 'soil intelligence', the working group promotes collaboration and shared learning within this rapidly evolving field. Soil intelligence refers to the integration of soil data (from laboratory or field measurements, or Earth observation), domain knowledge, process-based models, and computational approaches, including artificial intelligence (e.g. machine learning and deep learning methods), and data assimilation, to support dynamic, adaptive, and informative representations of soil processes. Through organizing workshops, webinars and collaborative projects, the working group aims to strengthen the connection between science and practice, emphasizing open, transparent and reproducible approaches to soil modelling and management.
Mission
Our mission in the Soil Intelligence Working Group is to facilitate the integration of soil science knowledge and domain expertise with data-driven, model-based, and AI-assisted methodologies to enhance the understanding, prediction, and management of soil systems. The group serves as a consensus-building forum within the soil modeling community to advance both the “state-of-the-art” in scientific research and the “state-of-the-practice” in real-world applications, fostering exchange, innovation, and collective learning in this rapidly evolving field.
Objectives
- Promote the integration of soil science knowledge, artificial intelligence, process-based models, and data assimilation into soil modeling.
- Enhance interoperability between soil data, models and digital platforms.
- Support the development of open, reproducible and transparent soil intelligence systems.
- Foster training and knowledge dissemination allow the community to grow with new technologies and methodologies.
- Facilitate collaboration between scientists, model developers, and decision-makers to ensure scientific advances are translated into practical outcomes.
Activities
The working group supports the organization of workshops and webinars, as well as the writing of collaborative position papers and research proposals that demonstrate AI-augmented soil modelling, soil digital twins, data integration and real-time soil monitoring.
