Report ISMC Science Panel Meeting during the EGU conference in Vienna

Jan Vanderborght presented the ppt presentation that summarises the outcome of the Austin International Soil Conference on Soil Modeling that took place March 29 – April 1, 2016, at the University of Texas at Austin, USA; in particular the outcomes of the working group 3 on model development and intercomparisons. This will be the basis for the mission statement of this science panel that will be put on the website (will be prepared jointly by using google docs and should be finished by the end of June).

Jan Vanderborght also reported that Patricia Garnier will represent INRA (France) in the ISMC; and it was discussed that VSoil (Lafolie) should be included as well.

Ullrich Weller and Diedrik Jacques mentioned a talk they had heard during EGU about a model database for organic matter models, that this database would fit into the ISMC. Diedrik also said that he already pointed out the ISMC to that group.

It was suggested that there should be, in addition to the general registration to the ISMC, the possibility to register for one or more science panels. This will be done via the website.

Additional people should be specifically invited to register, e.g. the providers of models in the model list of the website. Jan Vanderborght offered to contact David Lesmes (U.S. DOE) and Peter van Oevelen (Gewex). Diedrik Jacques offered to contact DOE as well. It was suggested to ask Yakov Pachepsky for additional contacts in the USA, e.g. USDA. Everybody will contact persons in their own circles.

Election of chair and co-chair of the science panel: should be offered via the website once the mission statement is online.

Next meeting: Every two years, there will be an ISMC meeting, every other year, meetings will be organised during big conferences. Organisation of meetings will be facilitated by the scientific manager (position now advertised).

My personal suggestion (Andrea): Next meeting could be during EGU and/or AGU 2017, and should already be based on concrete scientific presentations about work that we are now starting up.
