SoilGrid 250m Release + Handbook: Soil Fauna + ERA5.1 Reanalysis + 2020 ASA, CSSA & SSSA Annual Meeting + Meetings 2021 + Research

Release of new SoilGrids 250m product

New edition of soil property estimates for the world with associated web platform released (SoilGrids250m)

Since the sneak preview on World Soil Day 2019, ISRIC - World Soil Information has been finalizing a new set of soil property maps for the world (SoilGrids250m), incorporating comments from many experts and organizations. Numerous improvements were implemented since publication of the `2017 version’, making this a completely new product. The GIS layers can be accessed using various services. We are particulary pleased with the release of a new webtool with visualization, querying and download facilities for enhanced user experience.

The GIS layers can be accessed using various services (See this page for further details). Further, we released a webtool (http://soilgrids.isric.org/) with visualization, querying and download facilities for enhanced user experience.

Major improvements to SoilGrids include: a) direct coupling with quality-assessed and standardized soil profile (point) data provided by the ISRIC World Soil Information Service (WoSIS), b) an improved selection of covariate layers using Recursive Feature Elimination, c) quantification of uncertainties in the soil predictions, using prediction intervals, through implementation of Quantile Regression Forests, d) adoption of an improved and more realistic cross-validation procedure, and e) use of the Homolosine projection, a modern map projection that minimizes angular and distance distortions simultaneously.

ERA5.1 and other ERA5 news

Dear ERA5 reanalysis users,

We are pleased to inform you that the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) at ECMWF has released ERA5.1, a re-run of ERA5, for the years 2000 to 2006 only. ERA5.1 was produced to improve upon the cold bias in the lower stratosphere seen in ERA5 during this period. Moreover, ERA5.1 analyses have a better representation of the following features:

  • upper stratospheric temperature
  • stratospheric humidity

The lower and middle troposphere in ERA5.1 are similar to those in ERA5, as is the synoptic evolution in the extratropical stratosphere. Therefore, for such applications ERA5.1 will add little value compared to ERA5.

Access to ERA5.1 data is through the CDS API only using 'reanalysis-era5.1-complete' as per our updated ERA5 complete data download guidelines.

We would like to take this opportunity to let you know of the following ERA5 activities:

  • Climate Data Store Applications: "ERA5 explorer" and the "Monthly climate explorer for COVID-19"
  • Geographical area selection widget on CDS web interface now available
  • ERA5T-complete (e.g. model levels) in preparation for public release in late summer 2020
  • ERA5 back extension (1950-1978) in preparation for public release in summer 2020
  • ERA5T-Land in preparation for public release in autumn 2020
  • ERA5-Land back extension (1950-1980) in preparation for public release later in 2020

If you have any questions about our ERA5 products or wish to keep updated with the latest announcements, we invite you to visit our User Forum (http://copernicus-support.ecmwf.int/forum) . Alternatively, you may email copernicus-support@ecmwf.int.

Yours sincerely,

On the impact of increasing drought on the relationship between soil water content and evapotranspiration of a grassland

Core Ideas:

  • Both examined sites shifted toward more waterlimited conditions in dry year 2018.
  • The yearly phase shift between SWC and ETa decreased by greater dryness of 2014–2018.
  • The control of ETa andWSI on SWC increased by greater dryness of 2014–2018.

"Wavelet coherence plots between average soil water content (SWC) at a depth of 10 cm (SWC{10 cm}) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) at (a) energy‐limited and (b) water‐limited sites and SWC{10 cm} and water stress index (WSI = ETa/vegetation‐height‐adjusted reference evapotranspiration [ETcrop]) at (c) energy‐limited and (d) water‐limited sites."
