ISMC News 2 Dec.
AGU Soil Sessions
Hard to believe it but AGU 2021 is almost upon us! The AGU’s Soil processes and critical zone technical committee has pulled together a list of soil sessions for your convenience. From biogeochemistry to hydrology, satellite observations to genomics, informatics to field manipulations and everything in between. AGUs Fall Meeting has a little bit of everything this year.
Check out this google spreadsheet of soil sessions and help extend it!
See you in New Orleans or virtually!

AGU Critical Zone Town Hall - Dec. 8th
Dear All:
I wanted to bring your attention to an upcoming Critical Zone network-of-networks town hall, to be held virtually December 8th, 18:15 – 19:15 CST (UTC - 6:00) as part of the AGU Fall Meeting.
The townhall titled “Transforming Critical Zone Research Through Shared Science, Tools, Data, and Philosophy” is geared towards sharing outcomes synthesized from the two AGU early career critical zone workshops and related activities, and to contribute to the future of a global critical zone effort. The broader goal is to engage the community to advance modes of collaboration across critical zone (CZ) networks.
Through presentations from critical zone scientists and program managers across different agencies (NSF, DOE), this townhall is focused towards: (1) identifying high-priority science questions to advance critical zone science; (2) assessing needs and challenges to easily share data, sensing and modelling tools; and (3) discussing partnerships and modes that could maximize the ability of the critical zone scientists to address the priority questions.
This will be followed by an open Q&A session, which will seek to gather input from the broader AGU community on advancing modes of collaboration across critical zone sites and networks, and opportunities/challenges therein.
We hope you’ll join us, and please forward this announcement to all that may be interested.
Sincerely
Bhavna Arora & the Early Career AGU/CZO Workshop Team

Understanding Conservation Agriculture: Soil, Crops and Water under CC Tickets, Mon 6 Dec 2021 at 08:00 | Eventbrite
Overview of findings from the CEPHaS Project on the impact of Conservation Agriculture (CA) practices – minimum till, mulching and crop rotation – on the physical properties of the soil and changes to the water cycle in the farmed landscape.
The CEPHaS project is a network of researchers - soil physicists, geophysicists, hydrogeologists, agronomy and farm system specialists, statisticians and social scientists - who have been working at field experiments in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi to understand the benefits of CA.
Day 1 Theme: CA Impacts on soil functions and crop yield
Day 2 Theme: Soil properties and soil information
Day 3 Theme: Monitoring water in soil, crop and aquifer and capacity strengthening
World Soil Day 2021 hosted by FAO and GSP (3rd Dec.)
The World Soil Day (WSD) official ceremony will be held on Friday, 3 December at 12:30 - 13:30 (CET) with the participation of Dr Qu Dongyu - FAO Director-General and opening remarks by H.E. Ms Alexandra Valkenburg, Permanent Representative of the European Union to FAO and the Holy See. H.E. Mr Pyotr Ilyichev, Director of the Department of International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and H.E. Mr Thanawat Tiensin, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Thailand to FAO.
All soil enthusiasts across the world are welcome to join: from governments to the private sector, NGOs, academia, farmers, journalists, students or individuals interested in soils. Soil prizes, a publication launch, artistic performances, contest winners and keynotes will animate the ceremony.
Interpretation in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish will be available. See the agenda here.
