Assistant Researcher on Modelling of subsurface drainage at Irstea, France

Subsurface drainage, a hydraulic technic to control winter water excess in waterlogged soil, was largely implemented in France during the 80’s in order to optimize crop production under climatic and soil constraints. Nowadays, about 10% of arable lands are equipped in France, mainly for winter cereal. Current issues are more focused on environmental impacts of subsurface drainage on water quality of waterbodies. Prediction of discharges and agricultural fertilizers and pesticides in drained water are crucial to better manage and control non point source pollution at plot outlet. In this context, ATREMHYS team developed some concepts and simplified approaches and translated them into models named SIDRA (Lesaffre and Zimmer), SIDRA-RU, and Pestdrain, which required a parsimonious numbers of parameters (4 for the soils to simulate drained flow, and 4 for pollutants to simulate concentration in drained flow). We proposed to test the robustness of those simplified models at the level of France where subsurface drainage was implemented, based on large observed experimental data set, and improved the model using intensive monitored data (crop practices, high frequency monitoring) of one typical French soil.
Contributions are expected in:
- Robustness of SIDRA modelling at national scale
- Improvement of crop and intercrop evapotranspiration in recharge term of RU module
- Statistical analysis of drainage period at national scale
- Pesticide transfer via subsurface drainage by coupling pesticide fate with surface module (to be developed) and transfer function through drained soil (already described in Branger et al., 2009).

PhD position - Process-dependent porosity-permeability relationships, Forschungszentrum Juelich, Germany

We are offering a PhD position for studying process-dependent porosity-permeability relations for fluid-solid reactions in porous media. This PhD project is part of project C05 of the SFB1313 of the University of Stuttgart. It deals with fluid-solid reactions that pose a challenge for modelling flow and transport in porous media due to the dynamic changes in the pore space and the associated alteration of the permeability. This PhD project aims to use magnetic resonance imaging and x-ray computer microtomography measurements on synthetic porous media made from glass beads and soil columns to experimentally elucidate differences in porosity-permeability relationships for two different fluid-solid reactions: salt precipitation during evaporation and microbially-induced calcite precipitation. Experimental work will be closely coordinated with project partners in Stuttgart and the Montana State University in Bozeman, USA. In cooperation with other projects in the SFB1313, the acquired experimental insights will be used to improve REV-scale models describing both fluid-solid reactions. This PhD position will allow you to strengthen both your experimental and modelling skills, and will provide you with an excellent starting point for a career in science or industry.

Your Profile:
* MSc degree (or equivalent) in natural or engineering sciences with an overall grade of at least good; preferably with a focus on modelling or monitoring of subsurface processes
* Experience with programming in Python, Matlab, Fortran, or C++
* Experience with magnetic resonance imaging is of advantage

PhD on Integrated modeling of climate risk to smallholder farms in Sub Saharan Africa at ZALF, Germany

The Integrated Crop Systems Analysis group together with the Farm Economics and Ecosystem Services group are offering a PhD position in “Integrated modeling of climate risk to smallholder farms in Sub Saharan Africa”.
Background: Intensifying production of smallholder farming systems as a means of improving livelihoods and reducing poverty is pursued throughout large parts of West Africa. However, investments in improved agricultural technologies are very risky due to climate variability and poverty in the region. Identifying options to minimize risk to support long-term development outcomes could be supported by modelling tools that capture interactions between weather variability, crop management and farm income and assets. This proposed PhD position would develop such a modelling framework and apply it in scenario analysis to evaluate the impacts of different risk management strategies on long-term development outcomes.
Your tasks:
- develop an integrated bio-economic farm model;
- conduct household surveys and multi-stakeholder workshops in rural West Africa;
- perform scenario analysis;
- write peer-reviewed journal publications and contribute to relevant policy and practice reports.

The Soil and Microbial Biogeochemistry Group at UMass Amherst is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in rhizosphere biogeochemistry.  
We are seeking a highly motivated and well-trained scientist with a strong background and experience in soil biogeochemistry. The successful candidate will conduct independent research within the context of a DOE-funded project that focuses on the chemical/microbial processes controlling the fate of organic matter at the root-soil interface.  Solid knowledge of soil mineralogy, organic matter chemistry, and environmental microbiology is expected. Good working knowledge in modern analytical techniques, specifically stable isotopes and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, would be an advantage.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree in soil science, biogeochemistry, geosciences, microbiology, or a closely related field. Watershed/Soils Program Manager for the Helena-Lewis and Clark NF

The Program Manager position has responsibility for planning, directing, coordinating, and reviewing watershed and soil programs on the unit and reporting on progress toward achieving the goals and objectives identified through land management planning and project decision process.  The position develops long-range program plans and provides oversight and coordination of work and budget development associated with these programs.  The position coordinates the forest’s watershed and soils monitoring, determines applicability and adaptability of findings, and works with other resource staff and district staffs to resolve management problems.  This position participates in Forest Plan revision, amendment and monitoring in association with these programs.
This is a supervisory position.  Currently the position supervises three GS-11s, two GS-9s, and one Hydrological Technician.
The Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest has a full variety of programs to meet our stewardship and customer service objectives.  Major programs are integrated vegetation including fuels reduction, fire, lands, grazing, watershed/soils, wildlife/fisheries, recreation, and forest health.

PhD opportunity in Pesticide Fate Modelling in Air, Soil and Water at INRA (Montpellier, France)
A PhD studentship, funded by Montpellier University of Excellence for 3 years, is available on the integrated modelling of the fate of pesticides in rural landscapes. The project concerns the implementation and evaluation of a coupled atmospheric-hydrologic pesticide flow model over a vineyard catchment for simulating the contamination dynamics in the air, soil and water and the exposure of local residents. We are looking to recruit an experienced X-ray CT scanning specialist to join our world-class multidisciplinary team of scientists investigating plant-soil interaction under an ERC Consolidator programme.
There are three streams to the current team’s work: (1) structural imaging of plant-soil interactions using X-ray Computed Tomography, (2) chemical mapping of plant-soil interaction using X-ray Fluorescence and SEM-EDX elemental mapping in correlation with micro-dialysis soil solution sampling and ICP-MS analysis, and (3) multiscale mathematical modelling that integrates the structural and chemical information into the new state of the art mathematical model of plant nutrient uptake. The pathfinder plant for the project is wheat and the pathfinder nutrient is P.
We are looking for a specialist in X-ray CT scanning, accessing a variety of in house systems at the µ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre (see and national synchrotron sites (DLS and SLS). Familiarity with advanced X-ray CT image analysis methodologies and software is also an absolutely essential for this position.
To be successful you will need a track record of producing peer reviewed publications. You will hold a PhD or equivalent in engineering and be able to demonstrate experience in X-ray CT imaging of challenging multiphase materials e.g. soil. Ability to demonstrate the integration across different disciplines as part of a close-knit team is absolutely essential to this position.

Postdoctoral Fellow in soil moisture dynamics at University of Texas, Austin, US

The Bureau of Economic Geology seeks a postdoctoral fellow to (1) conduct numerical simulations related to diffuse groundwater recharge and/or (2) assess drought indices related soil water models calibrated with in situ sensors. The successful candidate will model the impact of soil and climate variability on related processes. 

We are looking for a highly motivated and team-oriented individual who develops and optimizes soil physical models to ground observations of soil moisture and evapotranspiration. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. within the last three years in earth sciences, soil sciences, hydrology, engineering, or a related field. Demonstrated experience unsaturated zone modeling (e.g. Hydrus), complex scripting and parameter optimization (Python or Matlab), applications using digital soil mapping, and a strong record of productivity in research are preferred.

Does altering heterotrophic composition in an ecosystem affect carbon-cycle climate feedbacks? We seek a curious post-doctoral researcher to assess these questions, who will:

·couple the dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS to the multi-trophic functional diversity model Madingley;

·compile and analyse a broad range of suitable observations to assess model performance;

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Hydrological/Agricultural Forecasting at University of Southamptonin, UK

The University of Southampton seeks a hydrologist/hydrological modeller with experience in the above areas for a two year research position. You will be part of a team on a new 3-year project “A new paradigm in precision agriculture: assimilation of ultra-fine resolution data into a crop-yield forecasting model”. The project is focused on the nexus of water and food security and is a collaboration between the University of Southampton and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. You will be working directly with Professor Justin Sheffield and joining other post-docs and PhDs based in Southampton and KAUST.

The project’s goal is to improve the understanding and management of agricultural systems in dryland environments via the development and use of new technologies, assimilation approaches and forecasting methods.

Specifically, the proposal will focus on identifying the critical processes and constraints on dryland farming, how to simulate and understand these, and how to integrate models with advanced observation and management strategies to deliver a transformative decision making framework.

We seek candidates with excellent data analysis and computational skills in hydrology and agricultural forecasting (hydroclimate data analysis, hydrological and crop modelling, hydrological and crop production forecasting, data assimilation, data visualization), to undertake research on characterising and understanding the variability and predictability of water resources and crop production at very high-resolution in dryland environments, focusing on case studies in Saudi Arabia, Zambia and the U.S. You will develop seamless monitoring and forecasting systems with improved predictability and reduced uncertainty via bias correction, data assimilation and model merging, and optimization of management strategies to improve crop production.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications) and experience in Geography, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics or Computing Science or a related discipline. You will also have knowledge and experience of working with large datasets and hydrological/crop models in a Linux/Unix environment, including scientific programming skills in Python, C, Fortran or similar, and using these to address local to regional scale water issues. Previous experience of working on hydrological problems in dryland regions, and a knowledge of water and food security challenges, are both desirable, but not required.
