Post doctoral fellow and MSc/PhD Student Assistantship at Agriculture and Agri Food Canada, Guelph

A post-doctoral fellow is required by Agriculture and Agri Food Canada to work on enhancing our understanding of the transport of phosphorus from agricultural land to surface water, both through surface runoff and tile drains, including the identification of critical source areas for phosphorus losses.  This work will support the development and validation of P loss assessment tools at both the field and small watershed scale.  Candidates must have a strong understanding of runoff processes and water partitioning, soil science, nutrient cycling, and a good grasp of farming systems and agronomic practices.

The successful candidate will be collaborating with scientists at AAFC, the University of Guelph, and the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate change.  Work Location:  AAFC, 174 Stone Road W, Guelph, Ontario Duration of work:  One year, renewable for up to 2.4 years (depending on funding) Application Deadline:  June 30, 2017, or until the position is filled  For more information, contact:    Prof. Asim Biswas at biswas@uoguelph.ca or Dr. Keith Reid at Keith.Reid@agr.gc.ca for more information or to apply for the position.

Interested parties should apply on-line to the Government of Canada Postdoctoral Research Pilot Program at https://emploisfp-psjobs.cfp-psc.gc.ca/psrs- srfp/applicant/page1800?poster=785734&toggleLanguage=en.  Note that this application is for a pool of applicants that may be considered by other government departments and agencies, so please inform the project principals that you have applied as well.

An assistantship (2/3 years) is available for a MSc/PhD program at the University of Guelph through Research Affiliate Program of AAFC. The assistantship is available right way with actual degree starting from September 2017. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a multi institutional project with leaders in the field (Dr. Keith Reid, AAFC, Ottawa; Dr. Pradeep Goel, MOECC; and Prof. Asim Biswas, University of Guelph). The student will conduct a systematic evaluation of Ontario P-index, a field scale P loss risk by ranking individual fields based on their potential P loss and contribute to a larger project. The study will be conducted focusing on two watersheds from southern Ontario in order to evaluate and applicability of modified Ontario P index. The student will collect soil samples, perform analysis in laboratory and validate P index using field observed data. Student will also work with conservation authorities to collect additional data on various aspects of the watershed and water quality. The project will involve field work (a driving license is required) to collect soil samples and experience will required. An experience in working with statistical analysis of field and laboratory data will be an asset. The student will be based at the School of Environmental Sciences (https://www.uoguelph.ca/ses/) at the Ontario Agriculture College
