PhD position Advancing structural-functional modelling of root growth and root-soil interactions

PhD Student (w/m) with a degree in Natural Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Applied Mathematics or a related field, Institute for Bio- and Geosciences, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany

This PhD position is part of a DFG funded project on “Advancing structural-functional modelling of root growth and root-soil interactions based on automatic reconstruction of root systems from MRI”. The project is done in cooperation with the Institute for Computer Science of the University of Bonn where an automated algorithm for the segmentation of root systems from 3D MRI images will be developed.

Tasks of the PhD position in Jülich involve mathematical modelling and simulation of root growth and root-soil interactions with focus on methods for upscaling water uptake from single root to root system scale. Furthermore, this position involves the analysis of 3D images of root systems which were obtained in the MRI facility of our institute as well as in the CT facility of the University of Southampton.

Your Profile:

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in natural or engineering sciences with an overall grade of at least good; preferable with knowledge about soil science and soil physics
  • Ability to write scientific papers for publication in scientific journals
  • good communication and organisational skills are essentia
